Photography

My experience ranges from sixteen years as a Photographer and nine years as a Photo Editor ensures that I am comfortable and capable of delivering at the very highest level when it comes to any aspect of the realm of professional photography.

The Photographer Years

I have covered many major international sporting events events such as Olympic Games, Formula 1, European Champions League, Le Mans, World Endurance Championship, Horse Racing, Athletics and much more.

My intrinsic love for sport means that I am equally at home photographing at the highest level as well as doing kids football matches or club level karting. Sport is beautiful and thus capturing it is a passion for me.

My journey in photography has taken me to war zones and places of immense suffering, and at other times places of great beauty while also affording me the privilege of covering the likes of Nelson Mandela (of whom I have a large collection of images since his release from prison) and also the likes of Ayrton Senna and many more people that at some point made headlines.

The Photo Editor Years

I was fortunate to be able to progress seamlessly into the role of Photo Editor after my spell in the field, and for nine years was privileged to have worked as Photo Editor for South Africa’s biggest daily newspaper (at the time) namely the Sowetan and later spent a number of years as Photo Director of Gulf News, a well respected newspaper in the Gulf region.

During this period I became an expert in digital photography, leading the transition from film based photography to digital, and along the way mastered the management of digital image archives.

At the same time I became well versed in managing big teams of photographers – of differing areas of expertise, age groups and nationalities. My role in this position was of a senior editor and thus was also part of the newspapers’ editorial decision making team on both newspapers.

My biggest strength is team leadership and galvanising photographers into teams who delivered at the highest level. As a photographer I empathise with their needs and characters. While my photographer coaching and training expertise earned me respect among my peers – as a result I have frequently lectured and run workshops at universities and photographic institutes.
